  • Rabbits & Seniors Christmas Brunch 2017

The Tuesday and Thursday Seniors group held their Annual Christmas brunch competition on Tuesday 19th December. Having been postponed from the previous Tuesday we were fortunately blessed with a superb winters morning.

52 members attended the after match brunch which as always went down extremely well, it was nice to see some of our former members who now play 9 holes.

44 players entered the Stableford comp with Peter Hepworth winning the Seniors Golf Shirt, scoring 36 points. John Haigh came second with 34 and Garry Burns third with 33.

Prizes were dished out to ten places, we then had a raffle and a surprise visit from Santa and his Elf.

Dave and Peter, sorry Santa and his Elf then ran a sporting quiz which went down very well and a good time was had by all.

Many thanks to Jane and Georgie and the catering and bar staff for looking after us so well, also to Graham for his help and advice with the prizes.

Wishing you all a very Happy Christmas and prosperous New Year.

Garry Burns on behalf of the Tuesday Thursday group.

    Seniors Captain's AGM Handover speech

It has been a pleasure and a great honour to have been Seniors Captain of Doncaster Golf Club this 2016/17 season, and an achievement which I will always be very proud of.

My aim was to organise the year in such a way so as to allow all Senior members a fair share of matches and to keep the games as serious fun days as we used to say in our football coaching years. I wanted to break down a few barriers and whilst keeping tradition and golfing etiquette to allow for a more easy going outlook on the game. Hopefully I have achieved this aim.

The Senior members have been tremendously supportive and my heartfelt thanks go out to all of you. Many thanks to Phil Brumfield for his great efforts carrying out the Secretarial duties in such a professional manner and thanks go to John Kitching for his help in the background which had made my year much easier than it could have been.

Vice Captain Martin Curran has also been a brilliant help this season and helped out quite considerably, many thanks to Martin and I wish you all the best for the coming season, I know you will love the role. Also best wishes to Martin's Vice Ray Black, a great appointment.

Many thanks to Ray, Joe and staff, Gavin and all his staff and the admin ladies, you have all been brilliant this year. Roger and the green-keeping staff deserve much praise and it has been a pleasure to invite away teams to our wonderful golf course. Truly outstanding.

Last and no way least, a high thanks go to Graham Bailey, Graham has been supportive to the extreme, advice, help with our matches, and his very generous help with our prizes etc. Many, many thanks Graham you have made my season so much more enjoyable than it could have been.

Best wishes to Martin and Ray for the coming seasons, the Seniors are in good shape and good hands for years to come.

    Best Wishes
    Garry Burns
    Seniors Captain 2016/17

  • Seniors Interclub summary

July saw us travel to Retford and let's just say that we got beaten quite comprehensively. However we did win our home match against Selby the following week.

August started with a narrow loss away at Sickleholme but a very encouraging win at Gainsborough followed.

September started with a narrow defeat away at Worksop and then a home win against Newark.

We have just one remaining fixture under my tenure and that is away to Holme Hall on the 26th October. We have so far won 8 and lost 5 matches.

All of the games at home have received excellent comments on our course from our opponents and our thanks go out to Roger and his staff for giving us such a good course in fantastic condition.

  • Any male member of the club age 55 may play in Seniors golf events. You will be able to play in our Seniors Friendly matches which are played on a Home and Away basis. The games are played as Four ball matches and whilst they may be played in a competitive spirit, the main objective is the enjoyment of playing other courses, the meeting of members of other clubs and the camaraderie, which emanates from this. There is an unwritten rule that when we entertain on our own course we look after our two opponents both on the course and during the socialising afterwards, when we sit down to a meal. Our visitors are not allowed to buy drinks but rather as Home players we make sure that we pick up the bill. Invariably our visitors leave with a good impression of our club and therefore we can see ourselves as ambassadors who have helped to cement the excellent reputation of Doncaster Golf Club.

You can also enter the regular Seniors events during the year.
Matches are played both Home and Away against NEWARK, SICKLEHOLME, RETFORD, WORKSOP, GAINSBOROUGH, HOLME HALL, and SELBY.

Seniors events include the Spring Competition in March, The Seniors Open (Better Ball) in July, Seniors match against the Juniors in October, Seniors Captains Away Day in July, Seniors Cup followed by AGM and Dinner in October, Seniors match versus our Ladies Section in October and Seniors Xmas Competition in December.

The Club Committee run a Veterans Day in June, which is an event not to be missed, and also a Seniors Mixed Open Day in August.
